What is Cayenne?
Cayenne is extracted from cayenne peppers, the fruit of the capsicum annuum plant. Peppers are a member of the nightshade family of plants which also includes jalepeños, bell peppers, tomatoes, and eggplant. Cayenne has been used for hundreds of years and was introduced to Europe by Christopher Columbus who first brought peppers back to Europe from the Americas in the late 15th century. The fruits were called peppers, because their spicy properties were reminiscent of the peppercorn. Cayenne peppers are significantly spicier than jalapeño peppers and have a Scoville heat rating of anywhere between 10,000 - 100,000 units, while jalapeños have 1,000 - 10,000 units.
