What are Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA)?

BCAAs are essential amino acids and are referred to as branch chain amino acids because they have a chemical structure which separates them from the rest of the essential amino acid family. BCAA's make up 40% of total body protein content and represent around 15 to 25 percent of total protein intake overall. BCAAs are found in their greatest natural quantities in products such as red meat and many types of dairy. These BCAAs are at a ratio of 3:1:2 of Leucine, Isoleucine, Valine and are derived from corn.

3 Essential Amino Acids
  • Leucine is the product of protein hydrolysis by way of various enzymes present in the pancreas.
  • Isoleucine helps stimulate the production and circulation of energy throughout the body.
  • Valine is essential in maintaining the structure of various proteins that it has been incorporated into.

BCAAs are commonly taken by athletes and body builders as muscle-building and endurance supplements. BCAAs work with protein to help build strength and assist with muscle recovery after strenuous workout and may promote muscle endurance.

BCAAs may also help maintain healthy blood sugar levels, maintain healthy weight, and support the liver

Serving Size & Timing

A single serving of BCAA supplement is around 1500mg of the powder, which is to be administered three times a day (more or less depending on intended effect). The more athletically inclined will usually use more than this, but any deviation from the suggested serving size should be discussed with a health care professional beforehand.

This supplement should be consumed 30 minutes before any exercise or 30 minutes afterwards. Taking it with a meal is generally preferable, as it may help eliminate any feelings of nausea that may come with the taking of the supplement. Suggested serving size aside, anyone that takes more than 400mg at once should be prepared to handle the bitter taste, regardless of how well mixed it is with another food source.

Some researchers say that a blend of ingredients that has found to be most effective in BCAAs is a mixture of 3:1:2 of Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine, respectively. This means that a 1.5-gram serving of BCAAs will contain 750mg Leucine, 250mg of Isoleucine and 500mg of Valine. This powder should be stored in an area that is both dry and cool and should not be placed in the light.

BCAAs have a grainy look and a white coloration. They are bitter in taste and are totally insoluble. The powder can be administered effectively by sprinkling on a meal, but since it is so bitter, the most common preference is to blend the supplement into some kind of smoothie or fruit-based puree.

People that introduce BCAAs into their system too rapidly have reported experiencing fatigue, muscle stress and muscle pains; this should subside if introduced in smaller amounts and over time, rather than all at once. Although there are no known drug interactions associated with the supplement, it may be wise to first discuss use with a physician. This supplement should be taken in lower doses than recommended if liver and kidney issues are of a concern.

During exercise, it is common to consume Branch Chain Amino Acids combined with a fast-release carbohydrate such as Dextrose or Maltodextrin. This is designed to prevent fatigue and thus improve athletic performance. BCAAs also stack well with L-Glutamine: together they form an unbeatable muscle-preserving duo.

Branch Chain Amino Acids have been well researched and are a safe supplement. We already consume them daily in our natural diet, and there is no known toxicity of Branch Chain Amino Acids. In addition, there are no known bans or restrictions in regard to supplementing with Branch Chain Amino Acids.

There is no guarantee of specific results and results can vary.

Great Product

I like this. You 10g a day to maintain protein synthesis. This allows me to now overload on protein, yet get my body to continue making muscle.

Pertinent ingredients

Pertinent ingredients make this very effective.
