Biotin is an essential nutrient that functions as a form of Vitamin B, sometimes referred to as Vitamin B7 or Vitamin H. It is believed to help promote skin, hair and nail health.

Serving Size & Timing

About 100mg of Biotin supplement is the recommended dosage per day. In total, this is about 1/64 of a teaspoon. However, the FDA recommendation is for 300 mcg per day, which is notably lower in dose. Because the mixture contains 1% Biotin, only 1mg of the solution is actual Biotin. There are about 1,000 mcg in every milligram, so 100mg amounts to approximately 333% of the daily value of 300 mcg.

This particular mixture of Biotin 1% contains 99% DiCalcium Phosphate, which serves as a carrier. The powder is very fine and should be kept in a cool, dry area away from heat and light.

No specific side effects have been associated with Biotin, and even overuse results in very few reports of problematic symptoms. Because it is part of the B-Vitamin complex, any excess is excreted through the urinary tract.

This B vitamin can be found naturally in the human body in small quantities. It is usually located and stored in the brain, muscle and liver. Biotin can be found in dishes that include egg yolk, liver, nuts, grainy cereals, beans and legumes. While processed foods may still contain some level of Biotin, the heat involved in cooking and maintaining freshness of these processed food items may inadvertently kill a lot of the Biotin available in these sources. The fresher the foods are, the higher the levels of Biotin that will be found in them.

Biotin 1% dissolves easily in water, coffee, juice, and most other drinkable liquids that are water based. However, it is most efficient when it is taken with other B vitamins, so try to find a B-vitamin-rich drink to dissolve it into.

Biotin 1%
The powder mixes well with my other supplements and does not effect the taste at all. Only been using it about a week and a half but as other reviewers have said it really seems to help strengthen your nails.*

Biotin (1%) Vitamin B7 Powder
I'm taking this supplement as a trial for my nails. As of recently, they are no longer peeling and breaking. My nail polish stays on longer. And, they are growing longer and healthier. I am truly satisfied with this supplement and will be ordering more in the future.*

Longer nails
My nails are usually slow growing, soft and rip easily at the corners. I cut my nails very short a week or so before I started using the Biotin. My nails have grown very quickly - which is unusual for me. They are still a bit soft but I am guessing that as they grow they will get stronger.

I take the Biotin daily in a bit of water. It is odorless, tasteless, and dissolves immediately. *

Is known to be anti-fungal per Doug Kauffman. Usually is added in only small amounts to multi vitamins. Price is excellent and results have been good so far.*

Pretty Good
I like the product for the most part, but it does not dissolve as well as I would like into water. *

Help with by Brittle Nails
The Greek word for life “bios” gives the vitamin called biotin its name. It seems that little is really known about how Biotin works in the human body but it has been found to help synthesize fatty acids, protein and the metabolism or carbohydrates. I had been very sick many years ago and hypothyroidism and adrenal insufficiency were some of my ailments. I also had Candida Overgrowth which is a Fungus. This Fungus is known to effect both fingernails and toe nails. I have corrected the condition using a plant based diet and feel like a kid again. But a lingering problem is my finger nails and any remaining fungus. They are still weak and very brittle. Research has found that the intake of Biotin or vitamin B7 helps that condition. It just take time to accumulate. There isn’t a good food source for extra Vitamin B7 around and hard to find a good source without additives. That's where Bulk Supplements comes in. I have only just received this and it is hard to tell. I have been taking another source and seem to notice less brittleness in my fingernails. We shall see. But I know I can trust the product for it comes from Bulk Supplements. I find Bulk supplements are exactly what they say they are without any additives.
Keep up the great work!*

Biotin is good stuff
To be honest, I haven't had long enough to determine if this product will help me or not. I have thick hair that grows fast, but it seems to be coming out when I shampoo my hair or brush it. I hope that the biotin strengthens it. Same thing for my nails. They grow fast but are starting to be weaker. I'm confident this product will help, in time, because I have not been disappointed in any other bulk supplement product I have tried, and I use quite a few of them! I received this product free in exchange for an honest review after I re-ordered chondroitin sulfate and Co-Q10. Thank you Bulk Supplements for offering pure products!*

An Esthetican recommended this product, and this website for products that do not have fillers, and get into your system faster. She mentioned they are more effective. She works with skin so why would I not want to take her advice? I purchased this for my mother who is 89, to help her with clearing up her skin, she reports it is easy to mix and takes it in a smoothy in the morning - I will be sharing this product with her, to review the results of this easy to mix product. Thank you for making great products!*

I use for co-ingestion w/ alpha-lipoc acid
I quote "It is suspected that the consumption
of high levels of Alpha lipoic acid depletes the reserves of the Biotin, a B vitamin..." from "Improving general intelligence with a nutrient-based pharmacological intervention" by Stough, Con; Camfield, David; Kure, Christina; Tarasuik, Joanne; Downey, Luke; Lloyd, Jenny; Zangara, Andrea; Scholey, Andrew; and Reynolds, Josh in the journal;
Intelligence, vol 39, number 2-3, pgs 100-107, Mar-Apr 2011. I take alpha-lipoic acid, and want to prevent any biotin deficiency from developing.*

I mix 100 mg biotin (Vitamin B7) in water and drink it for my hair. I am currently taking Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), which competes with biotin (Vitamin B7) due to their similar structures. So I am taking biotin a few hours apart from taking Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) for better absorption.*

Have not taken this by itself, I take it as part of a B-Complex. Given that it's not in too many foods I decided it may be wise to supplement.

Hopefully this helps with hair/skin in the long run but I cannot say one way or the other.*

Great Quality
I purchased this for one of the supplements in my second order from BS and can say that the quality of the powder is definitely in keeping with all of the other products I have received from BS.

A pure powder with no clumping.

Given the price, benefits and the low cost, I believe this is one of the products that all users should add to their Stacks.*

Too much Alpha Lipoic Acid and Pantothenic Acid can Deplete Biotin
After my last purchase, I was invited to choose and review a free sample of BulkSupplements Pure Biotin 1% (Vitamin B7) Powder (100 grams).

Update 12/30/14: Biotin can be depleted using alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5). I think this happened to me. I had read "The Four-hour Body," by Timothy Ferriss, who had said you can't overdose on ALA and had recommended 1200 mg per day. For the last three years I have been taking 1200 mg ALA every day.

In just the last few days I have read that ALA, B-5, and biotin share the same multivitamin transporter (the MTV transporter) to get these nutrients out of the blood and into the cells. These nutrients compete for uptake into the cells and biotin is usually the loser.

The makers of "Juvenon," a mitochondrial energy boosting supplement containing ALA and acetyl-l-carnitine have done research on this problem as it appears that their Juvenon has caused substantial biotin deficiencies in some of their clients (facial rash, loss of the sense of taste, hair, skin, and nails problems). They found that 5,000 or 10,000 (or more) mcg biotin solved the problems. They said that those with serious deficiencies (one out of a thousand clients) probably had some sort of functional deficiency perhaps in the MTV transporter.

I bought the BulkSupplements Biotin nearly a year ago and started taking 3,000 mcg per day. Immediately, my hair became much bushier and I had to get a haircut about twice as often. In fact, earlier, I had noticed that my hair and especially my nails were not as healthy as they should have been. I had even purchased silica and a bunch of other supplements but no help.

I had been taking a multivitamin, hadn't I? How could I be short of biotin? I checked the bottles of the different multivitamins I had been taking. The most expensive had only 50% of the RDI/DV (Recommended Daily Intake/Daily Value) of 300 mcg per day. Most of the bottles only had 17% of the RDI. The cheapest bottle, the one that I was using most of the time, had zilch, absolutely no biotin at all.

The best recommendation I can find is to supplement (RS) ALA with biotin at a 100:1 ratio. This means if taking 1000 mg (RS) ALA or 500 mg of (R-fraction) ALA, then need to take 10 mg biotin. At present, I am taking a daily dose of 500 mg (R-fraction) ALA and 10 mg biotin (1.0 gram, 0.196 teaspoon, BulkSupplements Biotin 1%).

Additional note: There are four so-called "mitochondrial targeting nutrients,"

1. Biotin
2. (R-fraction) ALA
3. Acetyl-l-carnitine
4. Niacin, along with all the other B-vitamins, especially vitamin B-5

These mitochondrial targeting nutrients can:

1. Enhance mitochondrial energy producing functions
2. Reduce oxidative damage in the mitochondria
3. Inhibit elevation of apoptosis factors
4. Improve immune function.*

Potent, Pure, Great Taste
I'm taking biotin to balance out the extra B5 that I'm supplementing with. Sources say that it's important to take extra biotin since B5 can compete with biotin and reduce availability in the body. Plus, biotin is hard to find in B Complex vitamins... and who wants all the extra fillers that come with those anyway?! (Mag Stearate, Stearic acid, etc etc)

This powder is easy to use. Mixed in my smoothie every morning - tastes great. *

Product Questions

I would like to use this for myself, but also for my dogs.
Some biotin products are mixed with sorbitol or xylitol, which are poisonous to pets. Other biotin products contain a vanilla flavoring, which is also poisonous over time to pets.

Does BulkSupplements Biotin powder - the 1% or the Pure - contain any of these sweeteners or flavoring?
