Potassium Citrate Crystalized Powder

Key Features

  • Essential mineral
  • Promotes healthy bones
  • High absorption rate
  • Taste

  • Mixability

Potassium Citrate is the resulting combination of Citric Acid and Potassium. It has a higher rate of absorption than most Potassium supplements and is often the favored source of Potassium for those who require supplementation.

Serving Size & Timing

This supplement should be taken in servings of exactly 275mg per day; no more, no less. Too much Potassium has the potential to be fatal, so it is always best to measure out amounts of this supplement on an accurate milligram scale. Do not attempt to use anything other than a milligram scale. This supplement should be stirred into a full glass of water and consumed that way.

The FDA recommends taking no more than 100mg elemental Potassium per day. Since this supplement is made up of 36% elemental Potassium, this means that a single serving of 275mg is equal to 99mg, which comes within the recommended daily dosage. If you have any lingering concerns about taking this supplement or your eligibility to take this supplement, it is best to discuss them with a doctor first, as individual needs for Potassium vary greatly.

As long as suggested serving sizes are adhered to, this supplement is considered safe. However, taking more than the recommended amount of Potassium may cause gastrointestinal problems and pains such as flatulence and upset stomach. Anyone that has been diagnosed with diabetes or anyone that has had kidney problems in the past should talk with a medical professional before taking this supplement. Do not take if you are pregnant or nursing.

Any drug that contains Potassium should only be taken as directed by a medical professional or under supervision by a medical professional. This is especially true for men or women who have had problems with their kidneys, heart, or persons who have been diagnosed with diabetes in the past, as large amounts of Potassium in the bloodstream can cause heart problems.

Some individuals may have an allergic reaction to this supplement. At the first signs of rash, dizziness or trouble breathing, cease intake immediately and see a doctor. Remember that Potassium appears in large amounts in fruits and vegetables, and a single serving of this supplement is enough to make up for an entire day’s worth of Potassium. Therefore, if you have had any fruit, remember to keep track of it before you take this supplement and proportion accordingly. Excess could, over time, cause heart problems.

This product should be stored in an area that is free from light, heat and moisture and should be kept away from pets and children.

Potassium Citrate
I like the instant dissolvability and clean neutral taste of this product. I am using it to try to lower systolic blood pressure, which was especially high in the mornings from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am, often in the 140s range and occasionally 150s. It seems to be helping. I take 1/16 teaspoon in water at about 6:00 am and 1/16 teaspoon just before bed. I believe 1/16 teaspoon is one serving yielding 100 mg of actual potassium, which is 2 and 1/2 percent of recommended daily value. Since I take this twice a day, I am supplementing a total of 5% RDV. I also get 2% in my daily multi vitamin. I've only been taking this one week and for that week my average daily blood pressure has been 127/72. My average of 6 readings today is 121/67. I also take 200 mg CoQ10, 2 grams squid oil, 2 Hawthorne capsules and 2 grams garlic capsules. since these are so good for arterial walls and mental sharpness I will continue.

As an added benefit, potassium is very good to maintain alkalinity for the bladder and urinary tract. For the millions of women struggling with chronic cystitis (inflammation of the bladder or urinary tract, they should look into this as a possible help. For several years I have been adding alkylizing drops to our water and paying quite a lot for these drops. This potassium has helped my bladder feels so much better. This was a surprise to me. I didn't connect the improvement to the potassium until I read a previous review.*

Great Potassium Supplement
Potassium citrate form is hard to find in high enough of a dose(above 99mg)....BULK SUPPLEMENTS is the solution!

Good price for the amount of potassium! Just what I needed.

The best part if no fillers, just the pure supplement. I like the citrate form for potassium as I feel it's greatly absorbed.

On top of that, this is powder and easily dissolves in water. I like it and hope to be continuing to use this product; I've also ordered the magnesium orotate and hope to review that as well.*

Kidney stone conquered!
I had chronic kidney stones. I have had many attacks, had a retrieval process and a lithotripsy. Neither was fun. I was put on the pill form of potassium citrate. The pills were very large and hard to swallow. After discovering BulkSupplements, I decided to just see if there was any chance I could find the potassium citrate in an easier to take form. I found it and unlike the pills prescribed to me, I didn't need a prescription! I ordered it, started taking it and it has kept the stones away for 8 years, without any recurrance!! I simply put 1/4 tsp in my morning decaf, voila, no more stones. No taste to it so you don't even know you are taking it. It dissolves immediately in whatever you decide to drink it in. I love this stuff and life without kidney stones is wonderful! I have also recommended this to several people who I know that also suffer from this horrible pain of kidney stones and they are now all doing well .*

Taking Minerals Four Hours Apart?
David's suggestion to take minerals four hours apart is just too impractical and unsupported by the evidence. Such conditions make a mockery out of supplementation regimes. Under such conditions, one would hardly have time to eat, since most of these have to be taken on an empty stomach. If taken together makes them ineffective, then I might just as well not take them at all. For example, I put all my water-soluble supplements in a glass decanter, mix them up and gulp it all down. Why? Well, I spend about a half hour just measuring and stacking them. That's how many I take. If I have to wait between doses, I will spend all day and not get a bite to eat. So, let's be cautious when offering public advice. Some of it may just be too inflated to be any useful.*

Potassium Citrate
I bought this to help with muscle cramps/spasms and after about 10 days of use I'm still not sure it has helped. I've been taking about 8 grams a day, with lots of water. I mix one teaspoon in about 24 ounces of water and then drink that, doing it twice a day. I'm still cramping up some so the jury is still out. The product is good, easily dissolves in water and doesn't really have much of a taste.*

I used to suffer most night with late-night feet and leg cramps. It's terrible to shift or stretch in your sleep and suddenly be woken up by the awful pain of a cramp. Most times the cramped muscles on the arch of my feet would be so abused I could hardly walk. I try to drink enough water and used cold packs, foot massages, good shoes, foot exercise/stretches... you name it, to prevent cramping. I decided to take these supplements every night before I go to bed (I can't eat a banana everyday, I don't like them THAT much) and switched taking magnesium and calcium supplements from morning to night and it seems to have solved the problem. Once in a great while I still get a bad foot cramp, but not most nights like I used to.*

Potassium Citrate
When embarking on a methylation protocol, potassium deficiency can be experienced, limiting desired results.
Mild potassium deficiency results might result in symptoms like leg cramps, fatigue, and irritability; with either excessive or severe deficiency potassium can cause heart arrhythmias and be life-threatening.
Since the FDA endorses woefully inadequate recommendations, one needs to perform due diligence and research prior to administering dosages which will exceed those FDA recommendations.
This form of potassium has been found to provide relief from those symptoms and facilitate progression in the methylation process.
This product is an excellent value.*

This is the best source of potassium, per dollar, and ingestion method, available. Highly soluble in water. I take 8 grams a day of this powder, which yields 40% elemental potassium, so about 3200 mg potassium, in the neighborhood of the RDA. Retail pills gov't regs max out at 99mg. Paltry. You won't find it cheaper anywhere else. Go with the citrate. Hands down best and I've searched, I'm a nutritionist. Buy it. *

I qualified for free shipping. Still my order arrived in 4 days. It came in dark pouches, good so that light does not affect its quality.

It tastes better than my salt substitute comprised of predominantly potassium chloride. So I now I sprinkle the potassium citrate on my raw veggies.

I read in a study of potassium, given women for 1 year, that the citrate form strengthened the women's bones who took it by 1%, while the women who took the chloride form had their bones weakened by 1%.

So I'm glad to have found this product at a very good price.*

Potassium Citrate - 250g Pure Powder
I have been using this product for the past three years. A friend of mine started me on it due to high blood pressure. I did not want to go on any type of lifetime medication as doctors recommend. This powder along with the juicing of green vegetables, celery and such has been great at keeping my blood pressure within the normal range it should be. Before it was always at around 135/150 or something along those very unsafe lines. I also dropped my stress level. Fact is I really needed potassium in my system. I usually put it in my water so I can consume it throughout the day in small amounts. I drink a lot of water. Thank you for helping me with my health.*

Potassium Citrate powder--used to moderate blood pressure
I have been trying to correct a mild metabolic syndrome issue which includes abdominal fat, pre-hypertension, and somewhat high AM fasting blood glucose--all related to years of stress and poor sleep habits leading to high AM cortisol. My blood pressure is highest in the AM, going as high as 135/85 and as my cortisol drops by mid to late afternoon, it drops down to near 120/80. I have tried many things: weight loss, extra exercise, diet changes, other herbal supplements, etc, all work partially. I have seen a study from Harvard which indicated that 5400 mg/day of potassium was ideal, significantly better than 3500 mg indicated by Brock. Although, I eat a high vegetable diet, I wanted to try adding some extra Potassium. I had been doing 99mg which did not seem to be doing anything. One site (MD from Scotland) recommends for all his patients to add 1 g, 2x/day. I added 1/2 level tsp in the AM (1.2 g) and within a couple of hours my BP was 115/75 and has remained so for the last week of using potassium citrate at this amount. In the end it was simply increasing the amount of potassium I consumed. So far no digestive upset. As usual for Bulk Supplements, they give excellent service on all my orders. *

potassium citrate powder
I have taken potassium citrate for many years in tiny 99 mg. elemental amounts daily. Because my current dietary intake is about 2.5 to 3.0 grams daily, everything I consume contains moderate to high amounts of potassium (no junk food), I do not want to increase caloric intake, and medical organizations recommend a total intake of 3.5 to 4.7 grams daily; I have started to increase supplemental intake. I am now up to 400 mg./day of elemental potassium taken in divided doses with ample water. Research indicates that cerebrovascular accident risk is diminished by total intakes of at least 3.5 grams daily.
The powder received from Bulk Supplements is readily miscible and has a soothing effect on upper G.I. tract. This may be due to its pH of ten, which diminishes gastric acidity. (People devour calcium tabs like candy to quench acidity. However, calcium has a pH of only 6.5. Also, excess calcium is harmful.)
The lethal dose of potassium is roughly three grams/kilogram (close to
the LD of sodium). However, smaller amounts can be lethal if: a) given
intravenously, b) if taken by those with compromised renal function (kidney), c) if taken orally all at once by those who have been deficient and have depleted stores. Some in group c who have taken a single oral supplement of fourteen grams have had fatal cardiac arrest.
Taking potassium in powdered form, instead of pill form, probably diminishes the risk of G.I. irritation. This is because pills may rest on one spot of the lining of the G.I. tract for a long duration. Powder consumed with ample liquid is more dispersed and diluted in the G.I. tract.
Temporary G.I. problems oft occur in those who take seven or more grams of oral supplement daily.
To decrease risk of mortality in those with a history of myocardial infarction, maintaining a serum level of 3.5 - 4.5 mEq/L is the optimal range found in a study of 60,000 adults.
To maximum absorption of any mineral, take it separately from other minerals. A four hour separation is adequate. Each mineral interferes with the uptake of other minerals. Of course, if taking the powder along with ample water in small divided doses is irritating to the G.I. tract, take it during or just after a meal.
To your health!*

Mixes Well
This product is terrific. I have adrenal issues, so I get depleted of potassium very easily. This is much better than pills that are bulky and require many pills to be taken. By being able to buy in powder form I am able to take much more than I would with pills, not to mention its much much cheaper. I simply mix it with water in my water bottle and drink it throughout the day through a straw. There is almost no taste to it once mixed, you can tell its in there because it makes the water feel soft. Potassium citrate really helps relax and calm me down. I tested low in potassium in my hair mineral analysis and I think taking this longer term will bring my depleted levels back up.*

Excellent Product for Maintaining Good Blood Pressure
I have found that this product helps to control high blood pressure. I was diagnosed with essential hypertension about 12 years ago, and was on meds (diuretics and ACE inhibitors) for most of that time. However, a few months ago I was able to get completely off the meds, and I believe that potassium citrate from BS played a significant role in this. It is well known that potassium supplementation can help reduce blood pressure, especially in those with salt-sensitive hypertension, since 'extra' potassium causes increased sodium excretion in the kidneys. This product seems pure, dissolves easily, and has little taste. I will continue to use it as part of my nutritional anti-hypertensive 'stack.'*

Fast shipping, good product
Was having a really hard time getting my required potassium in a day (4.7g is really hard to achieve dietarily sometimes), and I'd found that a lot of the pill supplements sold in stores were borderline useless because of how little the caplets are in most brick-and-mortar stores. This is to stop you from taking too much or ingesting it stupidly, but it also makes the caplets untenable as a solution. Outside of stringent dietary control, a solution of this powder (make sure to dilute it heavily!) is the easiest way of making sure you're getting what your body needs. Shipping was fast and service was good.*

Potassium Citrate
I have had a problem with maintaining my potassium levels for so many years I can't pinpoint when it became an issue , mostly manifested by nighttime leg cramps. I read in a blog how a person had found relief by using potassium citrate from Bulk Supplements and quickly made an order. After 3-4 days of trials of when and how much to take I settled at a heaping 1/4 teaspoon with each meal. I have experienced no leg cramps at all since beginning this regime and was amazed and quite happy when I realized my sleeping hours had extended from about 5 to 6.5/7. What a bonus! Needless to say potassium citrate will now be a staple in my daily diet*

On 1/12/2015 Arthur said...

Supplemental potassium is nearly always needed for a ketogenic (low-carb) diet and the citrate form is very easy on the kidneys
The label on the package is missing the milligram to teaspoon conversion. I went to the BulkSupplements website, looked up Potassium Citrate and got this conversion:

0ne-sixteenth teaspoon contains 357 milligrams of potassium citrate.

It might seem that the 275 mg serving size providing only 3% of the FDA-approved Daily Value is awfully small. The website had all sorts of warnings against even thinking of taking any more than a single serving per day. Some reviewers are making up batches of the Hackerschool's DIY Soylent which calls for ten grams per day of potassium citrate. I myself am taking six grams per day of potassium citrate.

The truth is potassium pills, especially potassium chloride pills, can be very dangerous so FDA regulations have been created prohibiting sellers from offering any more than 100 mg of elemental potassium per serving. If someone tries to swallow a handful of pills (or even one pill without water), the pills can get stuck in the esophagus or in the intestines and because potassium chloride is a salt, can cause blistering and conceivably potassium chloride could enter the bloodstream.

The mystery writer's favorite murder method is to throw a cat at the victim and in one of the cat scratches inject potassium chloride. All the smooth muscles including the heart will be completely paralyzed, but in a few minutes all traces of the potassium chloride will vanish. (The potassium and sodium ions will have reestablished their proper places.) No one can find the injection mark because it is hidden in a cat scratch.

The California death penalty is executed with three injections:
1. An anesthetic
2. A paralytic
3. Potassium chloride to stop the heart.

The following benefits of potassium are abstracted from MEDLINE (GreenMedInfo):

1. Potassium citrate reduces kidney-stone incidence in children treated with a ketogenic diet for intractable epilepsy.
2. Potassium supplementation reduces blood pressure substantially in African Americans consuming a diet low in potassium.
3. Potassium-rich diets may benefit patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
4. Moderate potassium supplementation results in a substantial reduction in systolic blood pressure.
5. Plant food potassium salts [citrate or malate] have a balancing effect on acid-base status and digestive fermentation in rats.
6. Potassium salts counteract an acidogenic high-sulfur amino acid diet.
7. "A medical application of the Ling association-induction hypothesis: The high potassium, low sodium diet of the Gerson cancer therapy."
8. Potassium may compete with radioactive cesium-137 uptake in living systems, hence acting as a radioprotective agent.
9. The post-agricultural inversion of the potassium-to-sodium and base-to-chloride ratios in the human diet have contributed to chronic, low-grade metabolic acidosis.
10. Higher intakes of vitamin D, protein and potassium are significantly associated with decreased risks of onset of overactive bladder.
11. Low intake of folate, and vitamin B2, potassium, iron and vitamin A of plant origin, increase the risk for ischemic stroke.
12. Licorice may correct hyperkalemia in hemodialysis patients and may reduce the risk of hyperkalemic arrhythmias.
13. Vitamin K and magnesium sulphate supplementation may prevent barium nitrate-induced toxicity [causing severe hypokalemia].*

Now my question, that I'm sure been asked in various ways. I am using ½ tsp in my smoothie ... How many mg does that actually rate to? I had read somewhere that 1 tsp was 5712 mg, so I am using ½ tsp as my supplement. Are these numbers actual mg of Potassium? *

I dissolve about 2 grams in a gallon of water and flavor it/balance out the alkalinity with apple cider vinegar and I notice a huge difference. It helped both hydrate my cells, and remove extra water I was retaining in my tissues, less bloat on my face. It also cleared up chronic dry skin I'd had for years. I think I was potassium deficient for sure. Another nutrient joins my pantheon of amazing natural remedies/necessities.*
