Phytosterol is a plant sterol, an organic compound that is similar to animal-based cholesterol. Sterols are precursors to important fat-soluble vitamins and help maintain overall good health.

Serving Size & Timing

Phytosterol has a suggested serving size of 1000mg to be administered either one time or two times per day, depending on the intended effect. It should be taken before meals. For those that do not possess an accurate measuring tool, about 1/2 tsp should be enough to yield the desired amount, with a more accurate measurement being in the neighborhood of 5/8 tsp.

Very few people actually report any adverse side effects as a result of taking this supplement. Taking any more than the recommended dose may result in nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation or flatulence, but these side effects are common to any sort of supplement overdose. Phytosterol should not be taken by anyone that has the rare disease Sitosterolemia, as this condition already causes elevated levels of Phytosterol present in the body.

Phytosterol and just about all other related plant sterols are not soluble in water; however they may be dissolved effectively in alcohol, vegetable oil and acetone.

My new arsenal against DHT
I did my research about prostate cancer, and Beta-sitosterol came up first. Supposedly, it can block too much DHT in my body. Testosterone converts to DHT. DHT also causes baldness in men. I try to take it in the morning with 1 tbsp of coconut oil when my testosterone is the highest. Also at night. Beta-sitosterol is lipid soluble, and I am assuming it's more bio-available when taken with some sort of fat.*

Have been using Plant Sterols for a number of years for heart health & cholesterol control. Was happy to find that this product has a mix of different sterols including the Beta Sitosterol. I give it to my husband also for a healthy prostate, & it seems to be doing the job intended.
As always, I commend Bulk Supplements for supplying great products & service.*

Phytosterol: Much better price, higher quality
I had been using one of the more well known prostate supplements with reasonably good results for many years, but thought maybe I was paying too much, after I had heard recommendations from others to look for the supplement (beta sitosterol) in bulk.

I found, read positive reviews on this product, and ordered the small size to try it out. Since I had actually run out of my long-time supplement about six months previously, and couldn't afford to order more because money was tight, I was feeling the consequences of being off of it for so long. When I received this bulk form phytosterol and began using it, I was surprised how quickly my symptoms improved -- probably within a week the difficulty in urination was greatly improved.

I have to say that I think this pure form, in bulk, works noticeably better than the pill form supplement I had been taking for so long. I just ordered a larger size of this and am looking forward to continued excellent results. (Will probably work even better if I can clamp down on my coffee habit.)

Excellent, effective product at a great price.*

Beta Sitosterol, Saw Palmetto, and Astaxanthin have greatly improved my health and appearance
Update 2/4/15: I have been having very good luck over the last year with my hair getting thicker, stronger, healthier-looking - even getting a better color. For this period of time, I have been taking a gram of BulkSupplements Beta Sitosterol as well as 12 mg astaxanthin and 320 mg saw palmetto. I have also been taking 10,000 mcg of biotin from BulkSupplements Biotin 1% plus many other helpful nutrients (see below).

Beta sitosterol (and saw palmetto) inhibit the enzyme, 5-alpha-reductase, from converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, which then accelerates androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness). Then, the astaxanthin converts whatever dihydrotestosterone still exists right back into testosterone. Yes, the thinning and receding of hair at my temples and crown has reversed and even many of the gray hairs have assumed a yellowish-orange brown color.

Dihydrotestosterone can also precipitate the onset of BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia), which can sometimes progress, very slowly, to prostate cancer. Beta sitosterol can also compete with dietary cholesterol improving one's cholesterol numbers.

The active component of saw palmetto is beta sitosterol. However, according to the advancednaturalmedicine website, "Saw Palmetto berries contain only a mere one part in three thousand of the Beta-Sitosterol complex." Therefore, I think I am going to drop my 320 mg saw palmetto. Unfortunately, nearly all the research on this subject is on saw palmetto, not beta sitosterol, so I will have to include the research on saw palmetto in the following clinical trials as abstracted by the GreenMedInfo website from the National Medical Library (MEDLINE):

1. Beta Sitosterol and Saw Palmetto are effective in treating androgenic alopecia by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone by way of the naturally-occurring 5-alpha reductase.
2. A dietary supplement containing astaxanthin and saw palmetto berry extract decrease dihydrotestosterone, increase testosterone, and decrease estradiol levels in healthy males.
3. Astaxanthin and saw palmetto extract decrease the growth of prostatic cancer cells via 5-alpha reductase inhibition.
4. Saw palmetto extract at clinically relevant doses may exert a direct effect on the pharmacological receptors in the lower urinary tract, thereby improving urinary dysfunction in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia and an overactive bladder.
5. Saw palmetto inhibits 5-alpha reductase activity in prostate cancer cell lines without interfering with PSA expression as is the case for pharmaceutical 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
6. Various plant substances [beta sitosterol, curcumin, d-limonene, DHEA, silymarin] inhibit chemically-induced mammary gland tumor promotion.
7. Pomegranate extract and beta-sitosterol may be a useful uterine stimulant.
8. Kimchi has anticancer activity [due to beta sitosterol content].
9. Vitamin D and beta-sitosterol may have beneficial effects in autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
10. Saw palmetto has anticancer activity against a broad range of human cancer cell lines, with special efficacy against hormone-sensitive cancer cells.
11. Saw palmetto induces programmed cell death in human prostate cancer cells.
12. Higher testosterone levels in both genders and higher DHEA-S levels in women predicted a more than 60% lower risk of falling.
13. Low testosterone levels are linked with cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome.
14. Resistance exercise and training results in the secretion of testosterone.
15. Testosterone has protective effects in Alzheimer's disease.
16. Testosterone enhances curcumin's anti-prostate cancer activity.
17. Progesterone inhibits prostate cancer cells via inhibition of 5-alpha reductase, reducing the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone.
18. Reishi (Ganoderma) contains a compound that inhibits 5-alpha reductase, suppressing prostate growth in rats.
19. Cuscuta reflexa and its isolate is useful in treatment of androgen-induced alopecia by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase.
20. Thuja occidentalis inhibits 5-alpha reductase activity suggesting it may be useful for treating male pattern baldness.
21. Mangiferin exhibits 5-alpha reductase inhibitor activity indicating it may have value in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
22. Piper cubeba may retard androgen-dependent prostate cancer via several mechanisms.
23. Cactus flower extracts may be beneficial in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.*

Urologist wanted to put me on medication for over active bladder that had some serious side effects but after some research I ordered beta-sistosterol and it has cut down my getting up 4 to 5 times a night to 2 times a night so I reordered a larger package and mix in in oatmeal and never know its in there so thanks Bulk Supplements for a great product.*

Beta Sitosterol
This Beta Sitosterol is a great prostrate nutrient. I put it in gel caps to make it easier to swallow. After taking it for about a week I could tell a big difference in the flow. The order turn around time was much shorter too, than other places I have ordered supplements. Thanks Bulk Supplements*

beta sitosterol
You can read all the benefits of beta sitosterol. I use it both for prostate health and for muscle tone. The reason I like the powdered form here is to get away from the toxic supplements in supplements. One in particular that was in my old supplement was Magnesium Stearate. The only con to deal with is it will not mix with liquid well unless you use a blender. *

Beta Sitosterol
The shipment came fast and the product is easy to eat, and a far better deal than the repackaged into filler-filled caplets pushed by other companies. Bulk Supplements is the way to go for both cost and purity.
With bulk you can take into account body weight, which is never considered in standardized pills. *

beta sitosterol is a marvelous prostate nutrient
Again, another plus for Bulk Supplements. Their service and quality is the absolute best on the internet, and I have never been disappointed, and it is much cheaper to purchase the powder form of a nutrient and encapsulate them yourself as some of the powders are not the best tasting in the world, but that is ok, since it proves that nothing artificial has been added. *

Beta sitosterol
The product taste bland, rather tasteless. The texture is fluffy light powder almost like sawdust. However since it does not dissolve in water it is somewhat hard to swallow. After one week it does seem to be helping with urine flow rate. I am having my blood cholesterol checked soon to see if it has any effect.*

Natural treatment for BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)
Excerpt taken from the web site of the NYU School of Medicine:

What Is the Scientific Evidence for Beta-Sitosterol?

A review of the literature, published in 1999, found a total of four double-blind placebo-controlled studies on beta-sitosterol for BPH, enrolling a total of 519 men. 4-7 All but one of these studies found significant benefits in both perceived symptoms and objective measurements, such as urine flow rate.

The largest study followed 200 men with BPH for a period of 6 months. 8 After the trial was completed, many of the participants were followed for an additional year, during which the benefits continued. 9 Similar results were seen in a 6-month, double-blind trial of 177 individuals. 10

Beta-sitosterol binds to prostate tissue and affects the metabolism of prostaglandins, substances found in the body that affect pain and inflammation. 1 However, it is not clear whether this is the correct explanation for how beta-sitosterol might help in BPH.
