Mannitol is a white, crystalline sugar alcohol that is used as sugar substitute. Mannitol is a polyol (sugar alcohol) widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to its unique functional properties. It is about half as sweet as table sugar (sucrose) and has a desirable cooling effect often used to mask bitter taste, making it a popular low-calorie sweetener for cooking.
Mannitol powder is suitable for ingestion and has been used safely around the world for over 60 years. It is non-hygroscopic, which means it does not pick up moisture. Its pleasant taste, stability to moisture pickup and its aversion to discoloration when heated makes mannitol powder ideal for use in pharmaceuticals and nutritional tablets.
Serving Size & Timing
Mannitol can be taken at any time of the day. Do not exceed more than 20 grams per day. As a sweetener, use 4 grams (1/2 tbs) up to five times per day. More than 20 grams in one day may cause a laxative effect.

This is in no way meant to be medical advice but I ran across information that Clinicrowd.info has been set up to conduct an informal clinical trial for people with Parkinson's Disease to share their experience and see if it might not reverse PD symptoms and even help dissolve folding of alpha synuclein as it has in some small animal studies. My husband with PD has started and just recently went up to recommended dose for his weight. (Protocol available on site once you register. There is no cost except for your purchase of mannitol.) My husband is experiencing some gas but he uses a homeopathic remedy when he gets it and it is not too bad. *
