Licorice is known as the “sweet root” . The Candy and the root are not the same. The artificial candy is flavored from anise oil his is not the natural licorice root. Licorice does get its sweetness from glycyrrhizin, which is fifty times sweeter than sugar. Needless to say, the root is very high in medicinal properties.
Licorice is an antioxidant, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, asthma, cancer-fighting, cough relief, DNA protector, immune system booster, chronic disease fighter, GI acid reflux and digestive support. It has tumor-modulating and hormone-regulating properties which is helpful in not only the breast, but also the ovaries, uterus, and prostate. Many ancient traditional medicines like China, India and the Middle East have used licorice to promote healing and fight disease. Ancient Chinese herbal formulas contained licorice because it assists in GI absorption of other herbs and enhances the effect.
I have been diagnosed with COPD and use this herb and others to help relive irritation of the mucous membranes and help break up thick mucous when it accumulates. I don't let COPD slow me down and find these herbs do help.
Traditional Ayurvedic medicine uses licorice root as an expectorant, spasm-relieving, and demulcent (relieves irritation of the mucous membranes)
There is some minor risks to it use over a long period of time. I use the recommended dose of 600 mg daily of it over a period of two weeks then wait a month. I don’t have heart problems but overuse of Licorice the FDA warns may deplete potassium levels. Potassium is a required electrolyte for the body. This finding was concerning the candy not the actual root.
