Ferrous Gluconate Powder

Key Features

  • High Level of Bioavailability
  • Treat for Iron Deficiency Anemia
  • Iron Supplement
  • Taste

  • Mixability

Ferrous Gluconate is a salt like compound which is a combination of Gluconic Acid and Iron. For every two atoms of Gluconate, there is one atom of Iron present. It is popular as a supplement because it has a high level of bioavailability, and is digested smoothly with little negative effects, such as stomach pain or other gastric discomfort as it goes through the gastrointestinal tract. Also, because it is so bioavailable, this means that the supplement can still be very effective in remarkably small servings, especially when compared to the absorption rates of other Iron forms, such as Ferrous Fumarate or Ferrous Sulfate.

Serving Size & Timing

About 130mg should be taken once per day without a meal. Just a little more than 1/32 teaspoon should be enough to cover this amount. The FDA recommendation for daily Iron intake value is 18mg. Since Ferrous Gluconate is about 11.5% elemental Iron, this means that 130mg is roughly equal to the FDA equivalent in elemental Iron measurement.

Ferrous Gluconate Side Effects

Ferrous Gluconate also has the potential to create stains on teeth, though this effect is only temporary. In order to make sure this does not take place, it is best to consume Ferrous Gluconate in a water or juice mixture and to take it through a straw.

Ferrous Gluconate Solubility

Ferrous Gluconate has somewhat of a sour mineral taste. It is not easily water soluble and it will cloud somewhat in a glass, but it can still be safely consumed this way. It should be stored in an area absent from heat, light, and moisture.
